The muscle is attached to the lateral membranous tubal wall along its extrabullar extension. The opening of the auditory tube (which leads to the middle ear) lies on the dorsolateral wall of the nasopharynx. The auditory tube (also known as the pharyngotympanic tube, Eustachian tube, Latin: tuba auditiva) is a tunnel that connects the tympanic cavity to the nasopharynx and equalizes pressure on both sides of the tympanic membrane. The tensor veli palatini muscle appears to be the only muscle to act directly on the tube and effect tubal dilation. Although the direct application of morphologic data to account for the observed function of a system is a tenous one, the data on the rhesus monkey auditory tube appear to be consistent with those published for other mammals. To our knowledge, this is the first case report of a nasopharyngeal sialocoele with confirmed underlying neoplasia in a cat, and the first description of CT imaging features of a nasopharyngeal sialocoele in a cat. This study was undertaken to define the anatomical characteristic of the system in the rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta) and to determine the limits on the use of the monkey as a model of human tubal function. Opening and closing functions of the eustachian tube are physiologically and pathologically important. It aerates the middle ear system and clears mucus from the middle ear into the nasopharynx. An extensive search of the literature has indicated little detailed information on the primate tube/middle ear system. The pharyngeal orifice of the equine auditory tube has not been adequately described. The eustachian tube (pharyngotympanic tube) connects the middle ear cavity with the nasopharynx. The upper end of the eustachian tube is narrow and surrounded by bone. The primate nasopharynx-auditory tube-middle ear complex is being used by several researchers to model both normal and pathologic functions of the human auditory tube. It is directed downward and inward from the tympanic cavity, or middle ear, to the portion of the pharynx called the nasopharynx (the space above the soft palate and behind and continuous with the nasal passages).
